Making Excuses Is Normal

Learning your phone number takes 5 minutes. Learning the 50 states of America takes a day. Learning English takes a decade! So, during this time, it is completely normal to lose motivation. Learners lose motivation for many reasons. Maybe you become frustrated or simply find something more interesting to learn. For example, did you know that there are more than 50 different types of kangaroo! Amazing!

My Favourite Bad Excuses

When we lose motivation or get distracted by kangaroos, we often use excuses to explain why we are not practising as hard as we should be. Here are my 10 favourite bad excuses I’ve been given by English learners.

1. I didn’t have enough time because I got fired!

2. My wife won’t stop talking to me in french!

3. My girlfriend said she’d help me, but she was too busy.

4. I haven’t written with a pen since high school.

5. I used all my mobile data watching ‘Friends’.

6. My vocabulary is too big to practise.

7. I left my books in my car and then lost my keys.

8. I practise writing on Facebook so I don’t have to write essays.

9. I can’t change my computer settings so I can only write in Spanish.

10. Sydney is too beautiful to waste time studying.

Keep Studying

The final message is simple. Learning English is long and tough. But try not to waste time making excuses. Keep practising and keep speaking!
