Formal, Semi Formal or Informal Letters
The first part of the IELTS General Writing Exam is a letter. IELTS say you should write in a Formal, Semi-Formal or Informal/Casual way. Unfortunately, this is not so simple. You can’t just use the same vocabulary for each formal letter, or the same vocabulary for each casual letter. Here are some examples of language from Formal, Semi-Formal and Informal letters.
Formal Language Examples
- I am delighted to inform you that you have been successful in your application.
- Unfortunately, the microwave delivered to my address last Saturday is missing parts. I would appreciate it if you could explain this mistake.
- I am interested in opening a new savings account and would be grateful for information regarding the accounts you currently offer.
Semi-formal Language Examples
- Next week I’ll be giving a presentation and I was wondering if you’d like to be involved.
- I just wanted to let you know that we are planning a party for next Saturday evening and are expecting around 20 guests.
- Congratulation on your promotion John, you really deserve it. I wish you all the best for the future.
Informal Language Examples
- I can’t believe it’s been 3 years since our crazy trip to Greece!
- Let me know what time your train will get in and I’ll make sure I come and get you.
- You’re a talented artist! Don’t worry about what other people say. Listen to your heart.

This letter task tests your ability to write in a natural and appropriate way based on the given situation. Remember to use informal, semi-formal or formal language as appropriate for this situation.
