Planning your essay is important because it helps you to organise your ideas into a logical order and it also makes writing your essay easier because you will have already thought of how to link your essay parts and even thought of some useful language to use.
If You Don’t Plan
When students don’t plan, they make the same mistakes with their essay. The most common mistakes made by students who don’t plan are:
- The essay discussions are not balanced
- The introduction and conclusion do not connect to or match with the main paragraphs
- Some of the ideas or examples are not relevant for the essay topic
Remember!
One of the marking criteria for your essay is Task Response which checks if your answer is appropriate and relevant for the given task. An unorganised and unfocussed essay might cause your essay to lose marks.
