A Popular Question

My students will tell you that I love questions. Almost every day I remind them to write their questions down so they don’t forget before class. One of the most popular questions I get is “How long will it take to pass the IELTS exam?” Of course, this is possibly the hardest question for me to answer. Why? Because it depends on your situation.

So, the best thing I can say is this. Think about your situation and be honest with yourself! If you have never done the test, maybe you just need time to familiarize yourself with the questions and test skills. If you have done the test many times but can’t get the grade, maybe you need to focus on your English skills rather than test skills.

How long?

It depends on you and your situation. Some students need weeks and some students need months. Try a practice reading and listening test to check your current level. IELTS recommends around 3 months of study to improve your grade by 0.5. For writing and speaking, ask your teacher or tutor to explain what you need to focus on, and how much practice you should do to reach the grade you need.

Remember!

IELTS recommends around 3 months of study to increase your overall grade by 0.5, and you already know that the only way to improve is to practice and practice smart. Your teacher will be able to tell you what you need to focus on before sitting the exam again.
