Talking About Time
Time. You can keep it, waste it, kill it and save it. Time is fleeting and also money. What a crazy language we speak!
Some days we have time to kill, time to waste and can happily take our time as we have far too much time on our hands. Maybe today I have a little too much time on my hands.
On other days, time flies and we all wish we could just turn back the hands of time.
As you can see already, I am using as many phrases and expressions about time. The more you learn and the deeper you look into language, you realise how important time is. ‘When’ we do something is almost always important in our speech.
Time Expressions In Movies
Time is fundamental in our world, so naturally it has made its way into the cinema many times. The most obvious example is the film “In Time” which very cleverly uses time expressions just like these in everyday conversation.
1. Do you have a minute?
2. No one has to die before their time.
3. Don’t waste my time!
4. I don’t have time to stand around.
The movie also makes other clever connections to time. For example, the police are called ‘Time Keepers’ which is an old name for a watch or clock. It’s a really interesting idea for a movie so if you have time, give it a chance.
Don’t forget that you can never find the time you need. You have to make time! So go out, and have the time of your lives.
And so I leave you with this proverb. “Time and tide wait for no man” which means – Take every opportunity you are given, as you may not have the same opportunity again.
