Writing Task 2

People like working for a company rather than starting their own business.

Why is this the case?

What can be done to encourage people to start their own business?

Introduction

Nowadays, it is undeniable that the majority of working age people prefer to work for a company instead of starting a business [1]. Discovering the factors that cause this tendency and creating strategies to motivate the creation of new businesses are fundamental topics for governments wishing to improve a country’s economy. The possible reasons behind this tendency must be discussed and may bring forward potential solutions [2].

[1] Introduces the essay topic with a fact or by paraphrasing the question

[2] Shows the two sides of the essay you will discuss

Paragraph 1

Firstly, working as an employee provides a sense of financial security not experienced by the self-employed [3]. In other words, someone who works for a company can feel confident that they will receive their wages on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis, regardless of the company’s financial performance during the period [4]. For instance, a hotel in a tourist city might be working at only 20% capacity during a low season, but despite this situation, the employees will get paid without delay [5]. Therefore, working for an employer offers people the peace of mind that they need, knowing that their expenses will be covered [6].

[3] Shows that we are now talking about the first by introducing it clearly

[4] Explains the argument which is now being made in more detail

[5] Gives an example to support the argument made which makes the argument stronger

[6] Returns to the essay topic by confirming why it is a good argument

Paragraph 2

High tax rates and governmental fees for new businesses are another reason why people opt for not opening a business [7]. Nowadays, business owners spend as much as 40% of their profits paying taxes and other governmental fees, thereby making the profits low in proportion to the great effort, stress, logistics and amount of hours that running a business takes [8]. Therefore, owning a business, is stressful, time consuming, and sometimes not attractive in terms of profits [9].

[7] Introduces another supporting argument for the first question

[8] Provides a real life example to support this argument

[9] Clarifies the argument and returns to the essay question

Paragraph 3

Following these arguments, what solutions can governments implement in order to increase the amount of new businesses [10]? Firstly, facilitating tax incentives such as lower tax rates or one to two years of tax exemption; and secondly, helping new owners to start their business with very low or zero percent interest rate credits will certainly be a good way to motivate people as this may drastically reduce the risk required [11].

[10] Introduces the second task question

[11] Provides suggestions as required by the question with clear explanations

Conclusion

In conclusion [12], financial security and the high fees that business owners are required pay are two reasons why people generally opt for being an employee instead of being an employer [13]. Facilitating attractive credit schemes and tax exemptions are good ways to encourage people to take the risk and open their own business [14].

[17] Introduces the conclusion

[18] Summaries the discussion for the first question

[19] Summarises the suggestions provided to answer the second question
